Join us and other schools to sing as a massed choir the very special story of Christmas in inspirational venues.

Our annual Christmas singing event for primary and special schools gives pupils a wonderful opportunity to come together in a beautiful, inspirational venue to sing specially selected songs accompanied by an ensemble of Edsential musicians with a narration of the Christmas Story.

What is Sing the Christmas Story?

Pupils from schools join together to listen to a narration of the Christmas Story, and to sing specially selected songs for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, accompanied by the fabulous musicians from Edsential.

Which songs do we sing?

There is a different set of songs for each Key Stage and the children will learn them in school before the event. We are using carefully selected songs from Out of the Ark, including the new musical ‘The Twinkly Nativity’ for KS1. In addition, your school may want to share your own favourite Christmas song which is linked to the Nativity story. Your children and teachers will be invited to stand and share your special song.

What happens at the event?

Children from all schools will sit in school groups facing the front of the church, where the musicians and narrator will be seated. The Christmas story is then interspersed with the songs which the children have already learnt in school. If schools have learnt their own song, this will be fitted in at the relevant part of the story.

Can we bring parents?

Due to the large numbers of children taking part, we cannot offer audience seats. Schools may, of course, bring adults to supervise children and are allocated seats according to pupil/teacher ratio for school visits.

Can we use these songs again?

Absolutely! The songs you learn can easily be adapted to your school’s own Christmas event and as they include a traditional carol, the audience can join in! Please note, you may need to apply for a license to use the songs in your own setting, details can be found on the Out of the Ark website.

Can we take photos?

Schools may, of course, photograph their own pupils and we ask that you use discretion when doing so, and follow your own setting’s policy for use of these images. Edsential will not be photographing the event as a whole.

We have never done this event before and would like to know more?

There is also an opportunity for teachers and TAs to find out more about the event at one of the Teachers’ Meetings. There is no charge for these meetings as they are fully funded by the Musical Routes Education Hub where in addition to listening to and learning the songs, staff will pick up useful ideas for introducing them with their classes. You are invited to attend the following session:

  • Thursday 2nd November, online 4-5pm. Link will be sent to all booked schools on the day.

How do we get involved?
