Governors are responsible for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of a school and this includes activities taking place offsite and outside of school hours such as educational visits, residentials and extra-curricular activities.

This course will provide governors/trustees with an overview of their role and responsibilities in overseeing educational visits in schools. The session will introduce governors to the importance of educational visits and explore how they can support their schools and ensure they meet the legal requirements.

Key areas covered:

  • The importance and impact outdoor education and school trips have in helping pupils to develop personal and social skills.
  • The role and responsibilities of the governing/trust board in relation to off-site visits and outdoor learning, including particular responsibilities if they are the employer of establishment staff.
  • The key policies, legislation and national guidance relating to educational visits, including an acceptable code of conduct for both visit leaders and young people.
  • How governors/trustees can help overcome the barriers schools face when organising educational visits.
