Keeping Girls in Sport – Discussing Barriers this International Women’s Day

Why Do So Many Girls Drop Out of Sport?

Sport and physical activity play a huge role in building confidence, resilience, and teamwork skills. Yet, by the time girls reach adolescence, they are twice as likely to drop out of sports as boys. According to Women in Sport, more than one million teenage girls (43%) who once considered themselves sporty disengage after primary school.

So, what’s holding them back? Research points to factors such as:

  • Low confidence – Feeling self-conscious about their ability or body image
  • Lack of role models – Fewer high-profile female athletes to look up to
  • Limited opportunities – Fewer girls-only sports clubs and mixed-gender teams that feel welcoming
  • Social pressures – A perception that sport isn’t “for them”

Our Health & well-being team offer a specific programme to help schools engage girls in sports
