Learn to play a musical instrument in school with Edsential.

Learning to play a musical instrument gives children a lifelong skill that will bring enjoyment and opportunities. Research shows that children who learn to play instruments in primary school are more confident and have increased self-esteem (Wow, it’s music next by Anne Bamford Paul Glinkowski, 2009). Young musicians develop real practical skills and an in-depth understanding of music through performing and improvising on their chosen instrument under the expert guidance of a skilled professional musician. With Edsential, there are plenty of opportunities to play in bands and ensembles and to take part in performances in school and other concert venues.

Tuition is available on brass, woodwind, strings, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, recorder, piano, keyboards, world percussion, orchestral percussion, kit drums. Edsential tutors are professional musicians with experience of training and enthusing young musicians. Instruments can be purchased from Edsential or hired at a discounted rate.

Safeguarding the wellbeing of children is of paramount importance to us so all our tutors are subject to enhanced DBS checks and they undertake safeguarding training on a regular basis.

With Edsential, the school remains in control of the process of recruitment and administration so that lessons can be offered to families in the way that best suits the school. Edsential can support the school to recruit children by supplying a workshop, roadshow or information for parents. We can supply template letters to assist the school with organizing lessons and communicating with parents.

The Music Service will provide instrumental or vocal tuition for groups of pupils for at least 33 weeks across the academic year.

The selection of pupils, group size and duration of lessons for instrumental and vocal tuition will be determined by the playing standards of pupils, subject to the following:

  • The minimum length of an individual lesson is 15 minutes
  • The minimum length of a group lesson is 20 minutes
  • The maximum number of pupils that can be taught in an hour is 12
  • Your visiting teacher will advise on appropriate groupings to achieve the maximum educational value from the lesson.
  • Teaching can take place before, during or after school subject to availability of Edsential musicians. In all cases, it is the responsibility of the school to ensure that pupils are supervised whilst waiting for a lesson and on leaving the school after the lesson.

Schools may choose to pass on charges (in full or in part) to families in order to recover costs. The School is responsible for charging families.

Instrumental Performance Tests

Where appropriate, instrumental teaching will lead to external performance tests. In consultation with the School, pupils may be entered for ABRSM and Trinity/Guildhall public examinations, for which entry fees will be charged to the school.

Space and resources for Individual / Small Group Tuition

The School will need to provide a room for tuition which can comfortably accommodate the group of pupils plus teacher, music stands and instruments (some of which are large).

Where possible, the door should have a glass panel, If this is not possible, the musician may leave the door open while teaching.

Edsential Music will provide master copies of appropriate class teaching materials. Some photocopying of materials may be required. In addition, pupils may benefit from purchasing published materials.

Many schools choose to purchase music stands.

School Bands and Choirs Edsential musicians can lead school bands, orchestras and choirs, supporting schools to develop music-making opportunities for their pupils. Groups can be run as lunchtime or after-school clubs, or during the school day.

Students generally learn in groups according to their ability. More advanced students may prefer an individual lesson. Every pupil has a practice notebook to ease communication between home and music tutor. In addition, pupils receive an annual report detailing their progress during the year.
